Welcome to the last Newsletter of Term 3! Today as I look around the school it is great to see how many students and staff are participating in our Sports Colours Day. We are all looking forward to a footy themed lunch and some exciting lunchtime activities.
Over the last fortnight we were fortunate to have the Drug and Alcohol Network (DEN) visit us and conduct engaging sessions for all students. The presenters were blown away with the respect and engagement shown by our students. I am very proud of all of our students for the way they conducted themselves.
We are currently in the middle of electing our prefects for 2023. I would like to commend the Year 9 applicants for the courage and aspiration they have shown in applying. I look forward to hearing their speeches at the start of next Term, it is sure to be a very tough selection process.
This Monday we also had our first student showcase event. Thankyou to staff and students for the work that went into this event and to the parents and carers who attended for your support. An extra thankyou also must go to Miss Strickland, Ms Rose, the Packages of Learning (Hospitality & Tourism) students and 11/12 Hospitality students for the outstanding effort that went into preparing delicious food and hot drinks to serve on the night.
As previously shared with our school community due to Stop Work Action our school will be shut next Wednesday morning. Students will be able to arrive on site from 10.30 and classes will commence from 11. School bus times will not be altered on this day.
We hope all members of our school community have a safe and enjoyable holiday and we look forward to welcoming you back in Term 4.

Today was Sports Colours Day! It was fantastic to see people dressed in the colours of their favourite sports teams.

On Monday afternoon, 19th September, parents, students and teachers came together for the Student Showcase. Students chose a significant piece of learning that they have completed this year and presented it to their families and teacher. It was great to see students showing courage to showcase their learning to an audience and demonstrating their growth in learning.
A huge thank you goes out to our Hands On Learning – Café, 9/10 Packages of Learning – Hospitality and Tourism and 11/12 Food, Hospitality and Enterprise students for preparing and serving the food and drinks for parents, students and staff.
Thank you to all those parents that came along and helped us to celebrate student learning.
Mr Jason Shelton
Over the past fortnight, students at NNHS have been visited by the Drug Education Network (DEN), a state-wide, not-for-profit organisation funded to improve the wellbeing of Tasmanians. DEN provides organisations and individuals with evidence-based alcohol and other drug related services including the provision of training, resources and connections.

Our students listened and participated respectfully in the activities. We received very positive feedback from the DEN presenters, another in the long line of people who were blown away by the students behaviour. They were also highly impressed with the level of engagement from our all our students, which they considered amongst the highest they have had from the thousands of students with which they have worked in recent years. They were also very impressed with the friendliness and helpfulness of students outside the classroom and extremely grateful for the excellent support they received from teachers and TAs during the sessions.
We extend a warm welcome to Jane Allwright who is joining NNHS as an additional AP. She will be working with us through to the end of next year, primarily in the Y11-12 space. In joining our team, Jane will help us take our first steps into VET provision, as we look to offer parts of a Certificate II in Hospitality & Certificate II in Cooking beginning next year.
We also bid farewell to Mrs Niti Jaura from the Grade 7 team as she returns to Sydney for family reasons. We wish her and her family all the best.
Student Support
The good thing about being in Year 11 in the amount of responsibility, independence, and the respect you get.
You also get your own space so you can complete your work without being interrupted and the fact you don’t share a class with 20-25 people, which is good because the teacher can get around to help everyone and no one gets left behind.

Workplace Maths
In Workplace maths we have learnt a lot of real-world mathematics. For example, we analyse graphs, time and measurements.

We are currently using statistics to crack codes. In our recent task we needed to figure out what symbols correspond to what letter.

Art Practice
Students in Art Practice have worked with a wide range of materials this term. This has included clay, photography and drawing.

This term in Art Practice we focus on photography. The themes this week were nature and vantage points- where the emphasis of an image changes when we move our positioning.
College Life Sciences
This semester we have learned about body cells, genotypes and now we are currently working on plant cells. For one of our major projects, we are germinating different plant seeds and seeing if the germination rate can be improved using different treatments.

Food and Hospitality
Recently the Food and Hospitality Enterprise students were asked to provide food for the Parent/Teacher/Student Showcase night. They are currently focusing on local food production, so we sourced some rhubarb from the Derwent Valley Community Garden to make relish and compote to go with our tasting plate.
On Sunday 11th September, Ayce Maddox from Grade 7 and his team, the U13 Brighton Robins, competed in the Southern Tasmanian Junior Football League U13 boys grand final. The opposing team came out strong, however the Robins took advantage by the end of the first quarter, eventually winning the grand final. Congratulations Ayce on your sporting contributions.
