Since I last wrote, NAPLAN and Student Wellbeing and Engagement Survey results have been released. Unfortunately, this year’s NAPLAN data does not indicate relative gain because there was no NAPLAN test in 2020. However, we can see that we are doing better than similar schools in the percentage of students who are at or above national minimum standard in Reading and much better than similar schools in that measure for Numeracy.
There have also been very significant increases in the percentage of students reporting high wellbeing for absence of physical, verbal and social bullying. So much so that we are now outperforming the average for all government schools on these measures. We are also outperforming the State for high wellbeing when it comes to learning practices, meeting our high expectations and students’ feelings about the future. These results are an endorsement of the direction in which we are heading and a testament to the impact of the work we are doing together.
On Sunday, our 1972 Leavers returned for a school tour after their successful reunion dinner on Saturday night. It was fascinating hearing about their time at New Norfolk High, the impact it had on their lives and of the changes they could see at the school. Term 4 is a time of change for all of our students, from next year’s Year 7 students visiting the school as part of their induction to our Year 12 students finishing their final assessments.
Although much has changed over the past 50 years, this visit emphasised that what has not changed is the potential positive life-long impact school can have on our students’ wellbeing, learning and life outcomes. This is why, as a respectful learning community, we have high expectations for ourselves, for others and for the way in we learn together, and this is why we remain dedicated to continually building on the positive steps we are taking in our school improvement journey.

On the first day of Term 4, HoL Café had a visit from Mr Brian Mitchell, MP and Lisa Vagg, HoL National Partnerships Manager.
Mr Mitchell visited our Café group to get a better understanding of what happens in the program. He plans to share this with his colleagues back in Canberra

Mr Mitchell tasted our famous chocolate balls, our tasty chutney, and our ravishing velvet cupcakes. We are thankful for him popping in and checking out the fabulous amazing HoL Café team.

New Norfolk High School Taster Day was held on Thursday 27 October. This was a fantastic opportunity for all current year 10 and 11 students to find out about the courses available at New Norfolk High School in 2023, and to discuss suitable options with their teachers. Students participated in related activities throughout the day.

In 2023, VET (Vocational Education and Training) programs will be on offer. These programs are national accredited and are designed to provide pathways into employment or further study.

Grade 7 are learning about Ancient China this term. They have been demonstrating their research and ICT skills by describing and sequencing events in a timeline. Throughout the term students will be involved in a variety of mini assessments as they explore life in Ancient China.
