We have had an action packed first half of Term 4. Students have been involved in a range of exciting learning opportunities both here on site and also in the community. We have been very proud as a school to hear of the fantastic way our students conduct themselves. Some highlights from the past fortnight have included:
- Excellent sportsmanship on display at the inter-school swimming carnival. Congratulations to our school team who finished the day in 3rd position.
- Our Packages of Learning classes completed an on-country excursion and are to be commended for the respect they showed to speakers during this day.
- Rachel Smith and Suzie Van Eyk (Year 9) attended a Women in Leadership event at Parliament House and displayed our school values of courage and aspiration.
- Year 9 students have been assisting with a variety of transition events for next year’s Grade 7 cohort and have shown a great deal of growth in their leadership skills.
Many of our Year 9 students have also shown a great deal of courage recently during our Prefect application process. As a school community we are so proud of the way in which students stepped outside their comfort zone and ran for prefect positions. This year we had more students run than in previous years which highlights the strength and courage of our current student population. Not all students were able to be elected and it was a difficult decision for all involved in the voting and selection process. I would like to recognise the humility and resilience of the students who were not successful and encourage them to continue to be courageous and make the most of all opportunities offered to them. I would also like to congratulate the following students who have been elected as prefects for 2023:
- Nick Ransley
- Ethan Alexander
- Kyah Abel
- Liam Lowe
- Lucy Gleeson
- Kodi Stevenson
- Hudson Woolley
- Suzie Van Eyk
- Sophie McNeill
- Felicity Woodham
We are looking forward to a productive and enjoyable second half of Term 4.

It's full steam ahead in the Junior School (Years 7 and 8) this term. Students have been enjoying the sunshine and making the most of outdoor learning opportunities. They have also been working hard on classes inside as well.
Year 7 Art - Picasso Style
After Mr Veness’s recent trip to Barcelona, and his visit to the Picasso Museum, he himself was inspired to share with the students in Year 7 the incredible abstract works of that famous artist.

Year 8 Vikings
In Class 82 we have started a unit on Vikings. We constructed Viking ships that included war shields and Viking symbols. While constructing our long ships we observed the ornate design that the Vikings created. We also observed that the shape of the long ships enabled them to successfully go into open waters.
Year 8 English
In year 8 we are doing a unit in creative writing. Class 82 have been creating ‘word pictures’ while learning about setting.
Writing examples...
The empty house crumbled as nature took back its territory, claiming the rotting house. The crooked doors squeaked as the breeze poured into the wreck. However, rats and other rodents made the desolate building their home and scavenged the house for edible food.
On the mountains in a misty canyon there are crisp jagged mossy rocks in the emptiness of nowhere. The long dark dusty road leads to the top of the mountain. The top of the mountain is trapped in a valley of mist and dust.

WORK EXPERIENCE AT THE RADIO STATION
On Friday the 5th November and 11th November, I started doing a bit of radio training over at the 98.9 Tyga FM studio with radio presenter Bruce Lamb.
He showed me the ropes of doing radio, such as talking clearly, knowing the listener and also making sure you give good explanations.
I really enjoyed watching Bruce in action, how he presented the songs and programs. For example, when he said, ‘from the movie Guys and Dolls, we have the song called “Sit down you're rockin’ the boat”’. The message I learned from Bruce was to show the courage to be able to do a radio show for the whole community.
This has been a really good experience to be able to volunteer to do something for the New Norfolk Community. I want to thank Bruce for showing me the ropes and for giving me the opportunity. I’d also like to thank the rest of the Tyga FM team, Mr. Kingsley for organising this experience and Ms. Courtney and Mrs. Woolley for their extra help and support.

PACKAGES OF LEARNING: ON COUNTRY EXCURSION
On Wednesday 16th November, students from the Packages of Learning classes attended an excursion to Bedlam Walls and Risdon Cove. When we arrived at Geilston Bay, we did a short 10-minute bush walk to arrive at Bedlam Walls. Arriving at Bedlam Walls we looked at the landscape and imagined what it would’ve looked like thousands of years ago before the invasion. We met Larah and Ruby from Aboriginal Education Services, and Dayne, who is an on country ranger. They told us about the traditional tools that Aboriginals use, and the heritage of the land.
After a quick walk back to the bus, we made the short journey to Risdon Cove where we enjoyed a lovely barbeque lunch cooked by some of the year 10 students. We then took a short walk to the Bowen Monument where we learnt about the massacre and the importance of learning about Aboriginal history. Next we started a walk up the hill to where a European settlers hut used to be. We then continued to walk up the rest of the hill where we finished up with a QnA.
We would like to say a big thank you to Miss Strickland, Mr Matheson, Mr Pidhaini, Jane and Louis for organising and coming along with us on this excursion. It was a wonderful day and we are all very grateful for this experience.

TEACHING AND LEARNING: NOTES AND NUMERACY
Reports
Reports will be sent to homes during Week 9. If you have any queries about your child’s learning, please contact the school.
PAT
Students have recently been undertaking Progressive Achievement Testing (PAT) in Reading, Maths and Science. Staff will use this information to set goals for your child over the next 12 months to achieve the desired amount of growth for every student. If you would like to know any more about your child’s achievement, then please contact the school.
Numeracy activity: Reach 100
Here is a grid of four "boxes":
You must choose four different digits from 1−9 and put one in each box. For example:
This gives four two-digit numbers:
In this case their sum is 151.
Try a few examples of your own.
Is there a quick way to tell if the total is going to be even or odd?
Your challenge is to find four different digits that give four two-digit numbers which add to a total of 100.
How many ways can you find of doing it?
Show your solutions to Mr Shelton for pink slips or a prize.
