In many ways, for the school and our community, this has been a difficult year. COVID cases increased significantly in the new year, keeping many students and staff away from school and putting a strain on many families. Restrictions introduced by the Department in response meant that we were not able to combine students from different classes or engage in many of the activities which have otherwise been a regular part of our school life.
On top of staff absences, workforce shortages meant that it has been very challenging to fill teaching positions. For both of those reasons, there has been more reliance on relief teachers than usual and a much greater requirement, particularly earlier in the year, for teachers to cover other classes.
For these reasons, it has been even more heartening to see the improvements we have seen this year. As I have already reported, there were positive NAPLAN and Student Wellbeing and Engagement Survey results to celebrate. In the middle of the year, the School Review Team reported on the marked improvement in learning improvements and student behaviour compared to their previous visit. Indeed, in many areas, we have seen a 50% improvement in suspension data year-on-year.
On Tuesday night, we have the opportunity to celebrate winners of prizes and awards from across the school. However, the improvements that we have seen are not only the result of individual students, members of staff or families. Instead, they have come about because of a collective effort, through working together with a common purpose. I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all—students, families and staff—for your consistent efforts throughout the year.

The following Year 10 and 11 students are to be congratulated for successfully completing their RSA (Responsible Service of Alcohol) training and assessment. The unit provides training on the responsible service of alcohol, teaching the students skills and knowledge required to responsibly sell, serve or supply alcohol. It has also given them a TCE point towards their Tasmanian Certificate of Education.
This is a fantastic start to years 11/12 at New Norfolk High School.

Mrs Allwright
On Wednesday 30th November, over 70 Grade 6 students from local primary schools attended the Grade 7 Orientation Day. Many students arrived early to get a toastie from breakfast club and a hot chocolate from the school café. Students began their day with a grade assembly and then moved into a rotation of classes. Classes included My Education, Respectful Relationships, Foods, Art, Health & Physical Education, and a STEM class. Student highlights included, creating lino prints with Mr Veness in Art, playing budge in HPE and making berry muffins with Ms Rose in Foods. Throughout the day Grade 9 leaders assisted the Grade 6 students in activities and kept an eye out for students that deserved a pink slip for demonstrating the school values: respect, courage, growth and aspiration. It was fantastic to gather all students together at the end of the day to reflect on an eventful day and to have a pink slip reward draw. The staff and older students at NNHS are really excited for the Grade 7 students of 2023!

GRADE 7 NOT MT. FIELD EXCURSION
On Wednesday 30th November, Grade 7 students attended an Outdoor Learning Day at Tynwald Park and Derwent Valley PCYC. Plans to head to Mt Field National Park were thwarted by forecasted adverse weather, so at the last minute, a day around New Norfolk was planned. After a briefing in the library, students were bussed to Tynwald Park to participate in activities including Geography Field Sketching, Scavenger Hunt, Quadrat sampling, Leaf tracings, cricket, AFL islands, and cornhole as well as break times using the play equipment.

At 11:45am we headed to PCYC for a whole grade game of Dodgeball, then a choice of activities including half court basketball, futsal, jigsaw puzzles and air-hockey. We arrived back at school in time for lunch, meeting the visiting Grade 6 students on Transition day. The afternoon session took place in the Year 11/12 area, with students opting into a variety of activities including Kahoot!, a movie and Christmas Craft.

A huge thanks goes to supervising staff who were flexible with the last minute changes, including Ms Wylie, Mr McLean, Ms Strickland, Mr Monte and Mrs Reeve. Additional thanks to Lexie, Margie and Christian who supported the grade 7s on this day. And a massive thanks to Broden who ran activities at the PCYC. The students were exhausted by the end of the day and generally had a good time.
