It is a busy time of year for our school, with a number of significant events & celebrations. It has been a big year, with many challenges, but also with much worth celebrating. Our recent Presentation Evening and final Assembly had more family and community members than we have seen for a number of years and it was great to be able honour many of those achievements together. Particular congratulations to all our Award winners as well as to those who have completed Year 10 and are taking the next big steps in their education and employment pathways.
As part of the evaluation of our progress across the year, we have recently completed our Annual Review. There were some great affirmations of the work we have been doing, with a 60% reduction in suspensions across the year, an increase in those achieving medium or high growth in our annual Progressive Achievement Test for Reading, and an increase in the number of Year 11 & 12 students achieving at least 60 points and 1 Standard in the year (indeed, a number achieved over 90 points and 3 standards!).
As with our Year 10 students, who are moving on to further study here, at College or through apprenticeships and traineeships, there is always a next step in our School Improvement journey. We have seen very significant growth among Year 7 students taking part in our tiered reading support program, MacqLit, with 90% achieving at least two years growth and 30% achieving three years growth. Next year, we will significantly expand the number of students who can access this program and introduce it for the first time in Year 8.
Finally, I would like to thank all of you for your support throughout the year. I would also like to thank all our staff for the dedication, flexibility and adaptability they have shown throughout. Working together, we will be able to continue to build on the progress we have made so far, offering more opportunities and increasing outcomes for all our students.
Have a safe summer and we look forward to seeing everyone who is returning in the new year.
At the end of the 2023 school year we will be farewelling 4 members of staff:
Grant Pidhaini will be moving to Victoria in 2024. Grant started at NNHS during 2020. In his time here at the school he has taught Maths and Science to all year groups and for the past 2 years has been a grade coordinator. Grant’s consistency and high expectations have allowed the grades he has led to flourish.
Lizzie Strickland will also be moving to Victoria in 2024. Lizzie started with us as a Teach For Australia associate in 2020. In her time at the school she has taught across a number of subject areas, including introducing the Hospitality and Tourism Package of Learning in 2023. This year Lizzie has been the Year 8 Grade Coordinator and worked quickly and effectively to develop strong relationships with the Year 8 students and families.
Nikki Morphett will be transferring to Kingston High School next year. Nikki has taught at New Norfolk High School since 2021 and has been instrunmental in delivering engaging programs in the English/HASS learning area. Nikki has been incredibly flexible and adaptable during her time here and has taken on many challenges such as teaching foods, as well as teaching the Year 9 Architecture and Construction Package of Learning this year.
Jane Allwright will be taking extended leave at the beginning of 2023. Jane joined us during 2022 as an Assistant Principal. In Jane’s time at the school she has worked in our 11/12 space and has led a variety of initiatives in this space including introducing the Duke of Edinburgh award and taking a group of students to Devonport as part of this program. Jane’s wealth of knowledge and exemplary organisational skills have been a real asset to NNHS.
In 2024 we will be welcoming a number of new staff:
Matt Wilkie (HPE) and Elinor Howe (Maths/Science) are both Teach for Australia Associates who will be joining us next year.

Although unable to attend in person, our recently retired art teacher, Mr Veness, was also honoured at the ceremony. Congratulations to them both!

Congratulations to all students that received an award. We look forward to an even bigger and better 2024.
Some very brave staff and students arrived at school in time to start our walkathon at 6AM! Throughout the day we ensured that our two batons kept moving continuously around the track before thunder and lightning bought a premature end to our day at 3PM! Students also participated in a range of fun activities throughout the day.
On Rainbow Day staff and students wore rainbow clothes and raised money for Walk4BrainCancer. We are so excited that we managed to raise nearly $3000 and collectively walked the distance from Melbourne to Sydney. We are planning to make Rainbow Day an annual event and would like to take this opportunity to thank the community for your support.
As the year wraps up its important to acknowledge the wonderful work that continues to go on in our food and catering space. Our students engage in best practice food learning with our wonderful teachers giving every learner so many opportunities to develop a wide array of food preparation skills.
Vicki and Cheryl in our canteen continue to work hard every day to offer the students and staff nutritious snacks and meals for recess and lunch.
We have also been privileged to be part of the state school lunch program. We acknowledge the dedication of the late Christine Woolley who initiated and set up this vital program for us at NNH. Leanne continues to work with Georgie, Vicki, Cheryl and our students to prepare the wonderful school lunch menu every Monday, Wednesday and Friday each week.
Of course, every good day begins with a great breakfast; Leanne, Mick, Andy and Leigh work tirelessly with the support of volunteer staff and students to provide bacon, eggs, pancakes and toasties every morning. Good food is behind strong and healthy communities.
What a delicious year it has been at our school again!
Congratulations and best wishes to Jayden who has been at New Norfolk High School since grade 8. This year Jayden attended New Norfolk High School whilst working part time at the Department of Police, Fire and Emergency Management (DPFEM) completing ICT30120 Certificate III in Information Technology. We are very proud Jayden has attained his Tasmanian Certificate of Education (TCE) this year. All the best for your future Jayden, we will miss your presence at NNHS.
