Our vision for New Norfolk High is a respectful learning community with high expectations for ourselves, for others and for the way in which we learn together. The things we need to do to live our School Values and meet these high expectations are called The New Norfolk Way.
One of the ways in which we do this is by working together on our School Values. This year, we have updated these to align with the new DECYP Values of Connection, Courage, Growth, Respect and Responsibility. Our values focus this term is Respect and, this fortnight, using respectful language. Students unpack these during their My Education & Respectful Relationships classes and staff work together in Grade Teams to ensure consistent understanding and messaging across the whole school.
Next week, there are a number of special events to look out for. On Wednesday, we have the Cross County Colour Run at Tynwald park. We will be hoping for some good weather to add to what is a very engaging and positive day. On Friday, we have two significant events, with a number of students travelling to Hobart to take part in the Science & Engineering Challenge.
Here at school, we are running a significantly expanded Careers Day Expo. There will be a particular focus on Year 10 students, who will begin work on a portfolio to support the transition process they all must undertake this year (whether). This transition process is very important for all Year 10 students, whether they are remaining at the school, going on to a College or into a traineeship or apprenticeship. We look forward to seeing as many as possible here on the day to engage with the industry and employee representatives who are volunteering their time to support this opportunity.

We continue our commitment to the DECYP, and our school values of Connection, Respect, Growth, Courage, and Responsibility. Our focus values for Term Two are Respect and Connection
Respect and Connection are fundamental values that underpin our school culture. These form the core of our school community, underlying every interaction, every classroom discussion, and every shared moment. Respect is about recognizing the inherent worth and dignity of all individuals within our school community.
Respect is demonstrated in many ways, from saying "please" and "thank you" to listening attentively and speaking politely. It's about valuing differences, embracing diversity, and fostering an environment where everyone feels heard, valued, safe and respected.
Listening and speaking respectfully helps to develop a sense of connection. Whether it's through collaborative learning projects, extracurricular activities, or simply sharing a laugh during lunchtime, these moments of connection enrich our school experience and create a sense of belonging which in turn has a positive effect on our wellbeing.

Throughout the term, Grade 8 students in MDT have delved into the creation of desk book shelves, pouring their creativity and newfound skills into the project. Their task was to craft a distinctive desk feature, offering them the freedom to design something truly captivating. The results? A myriad of imaginative designs that not only showcase their creativity but also represent their growth as they acquired and honed new skills collaboratively.
This term, the Grade 8s have been exploring Shogunate Japan in HASS. During this study, we have been investigating the geographical features of Japan, and will soon compare the similarities and differences between Eastern and Western societies have been structured throughout history. By learning about Shogunate Japan, students have been presented with a brilliant opportunity to learn about other cultures and learn lessons from key historic events.
It’s Term 2 and Music Room Lunch times are kicking off well with students utilising their lunch breaks to play and practise music.
It has been fabulous to see students sharing their musical knowledge with each other during these sessions, to improve their own and fellow muso’s skills.

Year 11/12 students have participated in two RACT programs this week as part of Road Safety Week. On Friday, they commenced the Ready for the Road program. This program supports the VET Skills Set, Road Safety. Students have completed ‘Identify interactions with other road users’ and ‘Apply fatigue management.’
When RACT visited the school, students experienced the effects of drink driving using “beer goggles” and practiced walking the line. A few days later, we visited the MyStateBank Arena where students made tote bags and badges, practiced taking a breathalyser test, and even drove around wearing beer goggles to simulate drink driving. Students were surprised by how many traffic cones they knocked over!

Welcome back to term 2! We hope everyone had a relaxing and restful holiday, ready to hit the ground running. We hope everyone’s holiday sports went well and kept being active across this time. This term started quickly with our first RecLink Community Series being played on Tuesday 7th May, the focus sport being cricket. Both of our teams competed very well across the day with both gaining wins but, unfortunately, neither team could finish on top to progress to the final. A massive shoutout needs to go to both our teams for their great attitude and sportsmanship across the day, highlighted by both Bobby Nossiter and Milla Hanlon winning their respective MVP awards for excellence and sportsmanship. Well done to all!
Coming up in week 3 is our school colour. Everybody looks forward to this event so we hope this year is another great day. More information will be sent home today. Lastly the first sport in our staff vs student series for the term will be this week and is badminton.
