Our vision for New Norfolk High is a respectful learning community with high expectations for ourselves, for others and for the way in which we learn together. Applying our Values to bring this vision to life is The New Norfolk Way.
Last week, students were able to demonstrate our Values of Connection and Courage during the School Cross Country Colour Run. It was a great opportunity to build positive relationships and a sense of belonging while accepting challenges and embracing opportunities. This event, at Tynwald Park and along the Lachlan Riven track, is always a really fun day. The way in which students engaged on the day was as heartening as the fact that we managed to avoid any of the rain falling on the surrounding hills!
Friday also saw two other very significant events. A group of mainly Year 9 students travelled to Hobart for the Science & Engineering Challenge organised by UTAS. Some of the tasks, which our students tackle in small groups, are definitely very challenging. It was wonderful to have such a significant cohort of students who put their hands up to demonstrate our value of Growth by aspiring to learn, and improve, even when it is tough.
The other event on Friday was a significantly expanded Employment Expo. Held in the Gym, and mainly targeting Year 10 students, this event included a range of employer, industry and training representatives. It was great to see so many students taking the opportunity to learn more about potential future pathways. Each student began a portfolio which will be an important part of the transition process this year. We hope to build even further on this event in future and also look forward to seeing Year 10 parents out our parent teacher event later in the term which, for your Y10 students, will have a strong focus on transition and future pathways.

On Friday, May 17th, New Norfolk High School hosted an outstanding Careers Fair, transforming our gym into a bustling hub of the world of work! Over 20 businesses and further education providers participated, offering a wealth of information on various career pathways and opportunities to Year 9-12 students from New Norfolk, Glenora, and Bothwell District Schools.
The fair featured an impressive array of organisations providing students with valuable insights into diverse career options, from emergency services and military careers to energy and agriculture.
Further education providers were also well-represented, with TasTAFE, the University of Tasmania (UTas), Claremont College, Vocational Learning Tasmania (VLT), and the School Apprenticeship teams all on hand. They played a crucial role in helping students review their Transition Plans and offered guidance on courses and career pathways, ensuring that each student received tailored advice suited to their interests and goals.
A highlight of the day was the exceptional catering provided by our Year 11 and 12 Hospitality students, under the expert guidance of Linda McCarthy. They kept everyone well-fed with a delicious array of food items, demonstrating their growing culinary skills. Additionally, Year 9 students Sharni and Meghan showcased their growing barista and customer service expertise by making and serving coffee and other hot drinks to stallholders, impressing everyone with their professionalism and enthusiasm.
We eagerly look forward to an even bigger and better Careers Fair in 2025, continuing to build strong connections between our students, the community, and the wide world of career opportunities. Thank you to everyone who participated and contributed to making this event such a resounding success!
List of stallholders: State Emergency Service (SES), Australian Defence Force (ADF), Tasmanian Fire Service (Tas Fire), TasNetworks, Master and Civil Builders, Tasmanian Beekeeping, Bentleys Corumbene, Banjos, McDonalds, The Link, Derwent Valley SUP, Bejo, Beacon, Southcentral workforce, MAS, UTas, Virtual Learning Tasmania, Claremont College, Tas Tafe, ApTSL apprenticeship team.
SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING CHALLENGE
On Friday 17th May students from Grade 9 (and a pair of Grade 10s) travelled to UTAS, Sandy Bay campus to compete with seven other schools on day 3 of the Science and Engineering Challenge. The competition is run by the University of Newcastle with heats across the country, and is an outreach program to engage students in STEM.
There are a total of 8 challenges: the bridge challenge lasts the entire day with the seven other challenges taking a half day each. Teams of between 2 and 4 students engage with the task and win points based on their successes. After lunch, the teams who are not working on the bridge challenge are assigned to a different challenge in the afternoon.
While our team didn’t fare particularly well in points on the day, there were some amazing moments. Angel, Jack, Addy and Rubee made a wooden plane in “Flight” that defeated all the other planes in their grouping. Lilian and Bo were able to design a river flow management system to capture most of their target sized “fish”. Zack and Leo’s initial design of a wind turbine worked well, however, a suggestion in design reduced the efficiency of their rpms. And Ms Murray realised that no matter where we go, Harry and John will always find a stick of some kind…
This was an amazing experience and we hope to compete again in 2025.

Students attending craft 9/10 spent first term exploring a variety of craft options including calligraphy in several different styles and paper mache. As term 2 progresses, students have been designing images to include on their graffiti panel before painting them on corflute.
On Wednesday 15th May, students participated in our annual school colour run. This day is always a favourite on the calendar for both staff and students and this year's event was no exception. Despite the chilly conditions, it did not dampen the spirits of everyone. As well as enjoying the run and getting coated in all sorts of coloured chalk, our students also enjoyed other various sporting activities throughout the day. A free barbeque lunch was provided and students from year 11 and 12 set up a Day for Dolly Cupcake fundraiser.
Once again the day was an overwhelming success and was thoroughly enjoyed by all. The HPE team would like to say a big thank you to all who made this day possible behind the scenes, especially to our amazing 11/12s and foods team, as well as our awesome ground staff for assisting with the set up and pack up.
We wish our students who have made it through to our Interhigh team all the best on Friday 24th May at Rosny Park. We know you will do your best and make the school and community proud.

Senior Music class students (Years 9/10) are working individually to increase their skills on an instrument of choice this term. In doing so the class is covering a wide variety that includes keyboard/piano, guitar, drums, percussion, flute and singing.
As a whole class we have been learning about the voice, how good posture and breathing improves and supports the speaking voice and therefore our singing voice. Along the way we are also improving our music theory knowledge and of course our knowledge and understanding of the greats! Last week students familiarised themselves with the band Queen. What a voice! And what a band! Many would say they are the GOAT (Greatest of all time). What do you think?
Free Food at NNHS
What is your opinion on the free food offered at New Norfolk High School?
Free breakfast at New Norfolk, in my opinion, is pretty good. And the lunches are also pretty good, coming from what my friends say at least.
I enjoy egg and bacons obviously, how can you go wrong with that? Though they’re a little runny sometimes but who cares. And I also like most of the pastas from free lunch, but that’s all I really get from the lunches.
The food is ok. I have tried some of it and others have said they like it as well. I really enjoy the sushi, chicken, and other stuff.
I think it’s good because some people may not have food to bring and they get to have some. I like having the yogurt (I haven't had a lot of the free food)
I think that the free food is a good idea for people that don’t bring lunch to school, but I think they should have more options. In the mornings we get egg and bacon and on Wednesday there are toasties which are nice.
Personally, I like the school lunches, and I think they’re a great idea.
