New Norfolk High is a respectful learning community with high expectations that we know as The New Norfolk Way. One of the ways in which we build this is by creating consistent expectations across the whole school. For the start of the new term, our teachers have been doing this work together by developing and refining consistent routines for gaining student attention and entering classes. Although it seems simple, working there is strong evidence that working through the many factors and options to be considered can bring valuable improvements in school culture, climate and student outcome.
Another positive step forward, mentioned in previous newsletters, is the two grants we have secured to upgrade student toilets at the school. The tender for the first of these, from the State Government, has been awarded and work is expected on upgrading the Year 7 toilets by mid-to-late August. Planning on the remaining work, supported by a grant from the Federal Government, is well underway and, as part of that, we are currently in the process of getting input from students and members of the school association. It is hoped that some of this work may commence during the summer holidays and you can expect to here more once plans are finalised.
Lastly, I would like to thank all of those who provided feedback on last terms parent-teacher event. Getting your voice on how we can improve events of this kind is very helpful. A number of people requested that we provide notice further in advance and, to that end, I would like to flag our next parent event, the Student Showcase. This event, now a regular part of term 3, will take place in week 8 on Monday the 9th of September. More information will be shared in the coming weeks and we look forward to seeing you then and sharing with you some of the accomplishments of our students.

All DECYP Schools are required to have a School Support and Wellbeing Team (SSWT).
The SSWT is responsible for whole school planning and processes relating to student support. The SSWT ensures that the school places a high priority on student support and wellbeing, working collaboratively to achieve learning, support, and wellbeing outcomes for all students.
Our NNHS SSWT consists of the school social workers, school psychologist, school nurse, grade co-ordinators, APs for student wellbeing, engagement and attendance and the safeguarding lead.
The SSWT meets once a week to put in place targeted support for groups of students and individual students with diverse and complex needs.
The SSWT uses student information and data to identify the most suitable support strategies. This includes managing processes such as behaviour support, attendance strategies and re-engagement initiatives. The team works with support and classroom teachers to put these recommended actions in place.
If you have any concerns or questions related to your child’s learning and or wellbeing, please contact their Grade Co-ordinator.
If you would like to find out more about the SSWT please contact AP of student support and wellbeing, Jodie Strohfeld, through the school office.

Term Highlights for Year 11 and 12 Students
Our Year 11 and 12 students have a lot to look forward to this term. Students are completing their RSA and RCG course, earning them several extra TCE points. With support from our School Association, we have received our Year 11/12 jumpers which are comfortable and a great addition to the college uniform. This term, our college students are taking part in a range of work-placement opportunities, including at Corumbene, Fairview Primary School, and other locations that are to be confirmed.
We have our Duke of Edinburgh camp in early September with 3 nights away at Fortescue Bay. A big thank you to the Duke of Edinburgh's International Award Office Australia for their generous grant to support our camp. We will visit Port Arthur, the UnZoo, and take part in some of the many scenic walks. Students have been given a packing list and are encouraged to return their forms ASAP. Bookings have been made for the Year 11/12 Celebration Day and Dinner for early November.
Academic and Extracurricular Activities:
English: Students are focusing on ‘issues’ this term with a focus on poetry. They will analyse poetry and create their own poetry anthology.
Personal Care: This term, students will engage in a range of fitness opportunities within the Valley, including yoga with Phoenix Coaching Australia, a gym session with Kollab Training, a boxing class with PYCY, and a circuit with Freedom Health and Wellness.
Community Service Learning and Community Service Cert II: Students are currently collaborating with Miss Cep and their VLT teacher to plan their 10-day work placements for next term. Work-placement documentation will be sent home over the next two weeks.
The Food Cooking and Nutrition class have completed three of their five units and now taking a deep dive into Unit 4 Influences on Food Choices before ending the year exploring contemporary food applications.
Road Safety students enjoyed the excursion to RACT Road Safety Week Expo to support their learning in the skill set. They are continuing their units about all aspects of driving and road safety.
Certificate II Hospitality students are now participating in practical assessment by working at The Swan Café before school and at recess polishing their customer service skills, making espresso coffee, milkshakes and other hot and cold drinks. The students also provided morning tea for our Careers Expo and at the Cross-Country event selling drinks and cakes.
Mathematics: Some students have begun exploring the mathematics of chance by playing games, calculating probabilities, and discussing everyday occurrences of chance. Others are focusing on data analysis, finance, and statistics. They are engaged in meaningful mathematical discussions and demonstrating growth and a commitment to learning as they solve a variety of math problems.
Reports:
To obtain their TCE, students must accumulate 120 TCE points, including their Literacy, Numeracy, and ICT ticks. Keep an eye out for the Term 3 Secondary Progress reports which will be sent home in Week 5.
