New Norfolk High is a respectful learning community with high expectations for ourselves, for each other & for the way in which we learn tother, which we know as The New Norfolk Way. One of the ways we show this is by looking to build upon the connections with have with families and the broader community. Planning is now well underway for our Student Show Case, which will be after school on Monday the 9th of September. As well as celebrating evidence of learning across all our core subjects, there will also be displays from all the other subject areas, as well as student prepared snacks, coffee & milkshakes from our new café. We look forward to seeing as many as possible of you there.
NAPLAN results have been released nationally and you may have seen some commentary about this in the media. As I’ve shared before, we are several years in to building our capacity to provide extra support in literacy through the MacqLit program and are leading the way with the introduction of the DIBELS reading assessment, which the Department has now committed to implementing across the state from 2025. We know there is more to do, but it was very pleasing to see impact of our current focus on vocabulary with a 14% increase in Y9 students achieving medium or high growth in spelling.
Finally, there have been too many school events and excursions recently to list here—from the Year 10 pathways focussed Tailgate Expo to VIP Day excursions to Bounce and excursions to a play at the Theatre Royal—but keep reading in the Newsletter, as well as checking our Facebook page, for updates on all the enrichment and engagement activities with which our students are involved. As another example, keep your eye out for some exciting news regarding our connection with the new Tassie Devils AFL team!

It is encouraging to see the reading fluency and word knowledge of students involved in this program improving as we progress through the year. We look forward to showing you further progress moving forwards

In week two we recommenced our AFL 9s fixture, on Friday 2 August we had our most successful day yet, both our boys and girls teams went through the day undefeated leaving both sides in very strong positions on there respective ladders, our boys team sitting three games clear on top of the table and our girls team sitting in second only one game off top spot and hitting form at the right time. Once again, our students support and respect across the whole competition has been great, and we look forward to this continuing in week nine when we will play in the finals.
On Friday we played our first staff v students sport for the term beginning with basketball, this was a great success with the gym being full of not only players but supporters there to watch the thrilling contest, the teachers got off to a hot start scoring the first six points of the game, after this the students mounted a mini comeback but at the end of the day it was not enough with the teachers running away 20-11 victors (a win the students put down to a height disadvantage). Well done to all who not only played the game but came along and supported in a very respectful manner, we look forward to our next contest.
Semester Two opens the opportunity for students to choose new electives.
Many of our music students from Semester One have chosen to continue their music journey into Semester Two, and we have been happy to have more students join us. Elective class sizes are getting bigger as more students find their place and space in Music.
In Week 1 this term, with new students joining us, Year 8 Music shared some of their thoughts and responses to the following questions.
Q1-What do you like most about music?
- The feeling, the joy of it. (Callum)
- How it sounds and how you can make about any sound/song on every instrument. (Logan)
- Being able to sing ….. and enjoy the vibe with it. (Oliver)
- How it makes me feel. A good way to pass time. (Corey)
- Playing it and sometimes listening to it. (Callum)
- Listening to music. (Jaiden)
- Learning to play an instrument. (Owen)
- (Leah)
- Listening to it. (Jordon)
Q2-What do you like least about music?
- Terrible songs!
- It has a high skill ceiling.
- The theory part and Taylor Swift.
Q2-When and where do you listen to music?
- At night, everywhere!
- All the time, home or in the car.
- When I feel like it, in my room.
- When someone puts it on, in the car on the radio.
- Whenever I feel like it, in the car or when I’m gaming.
- Whenever, honestly, most of the time! In the car, my room or maybe like at a bonfire.
How do you think you would answer these questions?
We hope you enjoy listening to music this week!

We’re excited to share that our recent VIP Rewards Day was a huge success! This year at NNHS we have been rewarding students who display our school values of Responsibility, Courage, Respect, Growth and Connection with Values Incentive Points (VIPs). On Tuesday the 30th of July all students were able to enjoy a range of fun activities as a reward for working so hard to earn VIPs. From sports to crafts and everything in between, there was something for everyone to enjoy.
But the excitement didn’t stop there! The top two students from each homegroup, who earnt the most VIPs, were treated to an awesome excursion to Bounce Play Centre. They had a fantastic time, and we’re so proud of their hard work and positive behaviour.
This day was all about celebrating and rewarding the great choices our students make every day. We’re looking forward to more fun events in the future as we continue to focus on encouraging and recognizing positive behaviour at New Norfolk High. Our next VIP day will be in the final week of this Term.

Attendance and Engagement
On Friday of week 2, several grade 9 & 10 students went to the Theatre Royal to watch 'The Visitors'. Performed by the Moogahlin Performing Arts & Sydney Theatre Company, this play took us back in time to 1788 where 7 clan leaders met to discuss protocols and what hospitality means with the impending arrival of foreigners on their shore.
Afterwards, while eating our lunch and ice-cream, students shared their thoughts on the play and the day overall:
"It was beautiful and moving" - Jo
"Fun and interesting" - Brandon
"Good to hang out with my friends and do something I don't normally do" - Max
"Great" – Connor

Year 9 & 10 Students Explore Careers at Tasmanian Building and Construction Expo
Last Thursday, 40 Year 9 and 10 students had the opportunity to attend the annual Tasmanian Building and Construction Careers Expo at MAC 2. The event provided an excellent platform for students to engage with local businesses and explore the wide array of career opportunities available within the building and construction industry.
It was wonderful to see the students confidently introducing themselves to industry professionals and eagerly inquiring about potential work opportunities. The experience was invaluable in helping them gain insight into various trades and professions.
One of the highlights of the day was the bricklaying wall in one corner of the pavilion. Many students, including James and Nash, took up the challenge and had a go at bricklaying, discovering firsthand the skills required in this trade.
The expo not only allowed students to learn about the industry but also inspired some to consider future careers in building and construction. We look forward to seeing where this newfound knowledge and enthusiasm will take them!
