New Norfolk High is a respectful learning community with high expectations for ourselves, for each other & for the way in which we learn tother. This is the New Norfolk Way. One recent example of this is establishing a new Student Voice group. Running in addition to our existing Student Leaders, this group is made up of a cross-section of students from Y7-Y10 and led by our Youth Worker and our Student Wellbeing Officer.
We know, and the evidence shows, that empowering students to share their views and influence decisions that affect them leads to improved wellbeing, drives student engagement and can create positive change. The purpose of this group is to provide an additional way in which we can include students’ views, perspectives and experience in our decision-making processes.
Speaking of our Student Leaders, the ABC were at the school this week to interview me and several of our Student Leaders about young people in the Derwent Valley. In particular, they were focussing on our collaboration with the Derwent Valley Council and the work we have done together since the Youth Forum, which was held in June last year.
One of the issues canvassed during the first Student Voice meeting was the upgrades to the Year 7 toilets as part of the Safer Student Bathroom program. These works have now begun and are expected to be completed early next term. Planning for upgrades on our Year 9 & 10 toilets, through the School Upgrade Program, is also on track, with the current expectation that some of this work will be completed by the beginning of 2025.
In this newsletter and our Facebook page, look our for other updates on some of the many and varied opportunities our students have had over the last two weeks, including Science Week & Book Week activities, Grade 10 RYDA Day, excursions to the Claremont College Musical at the Playhouse Theatre and the Festival of Bright Ideas, as well as yoga lessons, visits to fitness centres and a keenly contested staff vs. student basketball game!

We all know that life gets busy, and sometimes it can be a challenge to make sure our students are at school every day. But did you know that even missing just a few days here and there can add up and make a big difference in your child’s learning?
At New Norfolk High School, we’re committed to helping every student succeed, and that starts with being here, ready to learn, as much as possible. Regular attendance not only helps students keep up with their work but also strengthens their connections with friends and teachers, making school a more enjoyable and rewarding experience.
We understand that there can be various reasons why a student might miss school—whether it's health issues, transportation problems, or something else entirely. Over the next few weeks teachers will be reaching out to identified families to have conversations with both students and parents. Our goal is to identify any barriers to attendance and work together to find solutions that can help your child make the most of their time at school.
If you have any concerns or challenges when it comes to your child’s attendance, we encourage you to chat with their home group teacher or reach out to the school. We’re here to support you and your child every step of the way!
Thanks for being our partners in helping your child thrive. Let’s make every day count!
Warm regards,
Ali Walker
Assistant Principal (Engagement and Attendance)
Our Student Showcase will be held on Monday September 9 from 3.15-5.00 pm. The event will showcase student learning from across the curriculum areas as well as provide ‘Evidence of Learning’ examples that students have completed during the year.
This event will be held in the Foods block. Please enter the via the gates near grade 7 where our prefects will be waiting to assist you.
We invite all parents to join us during the afternoon to sample some of our delicious kitchen creations, cafe drinks and interact with the student learning, on display in the foods block.
There are no bookings required for this event.
Keep an eye on Facebook over the next couple of weeks to learn more about this event.
If you wish to discuss anything about this event, evidence of learning or your child’s progress and learning then please contact the school.
In Term 3, Grade 9 students are working hard to improve their marks and are working towards being prepared for the world beyond school.
Science
Students are looking inwards and discovering how their bodies respond to stimuli in their environment. The main way a human body responds to the environment is through the nervous and endocrine system. Students tested which sense (sight, sound and touch) was the quickest to respond to a ruler dropping.
Music (Creative and Performing Arts)
Weekly performance opportunities have been created due the development and opening of The Swan café at NNHS. Two recesses per week, we have a mixture of students and staff performing on the café stage as other students and staff order hot drinks, milk shakes and cookies!
One of our Year 9 music students has risen to the challenge of being our first ‘resident muso’ in The Swan. Being a resident musician involves committing to play at one venue, same time and place (in this case Wednesday recess in the Café).
Henry, our resident guitarist, provides such a great atmosphere for those who enjoy the space while at the same time developing useful skills that he can use once leaving school.
We look forward to having more students gig in The Swan as they develop their confidence and courage to take the stage.
Music and Drama students had the opportunity to attend Claremont College’s presentation of the musical ‘Rock of Ages’. We took the bus to The Playhouse Theatre in Hobart and were treated to a fabulous array of acting, singing, dancing and 80’s rock music! For many of the students who attended this was there first live experience of a musical delivered in two acts, with an intermission. The guitarists, drummers and keyboard players amongst us were particularly impressed with and inspired by the College rock band that performed all the music for the show.

This year the NNHS Science staff organised several activities and demonstrations for students to participate in during Science Week 2024.
On Monday 12th August the Year 11/12 catering class created a delicious morning tea, entry to which was a Science Quiz of 10 questions. On display at the morning tea were posters created by Grade 8 foods classes outlining the science involved in cooking food. Thank you to Linda, the catering class and grade 8s for their contributions to this morning tea. Congratulations to Ryan C for winning the quiz.
Lunch time demonstrations were scheduled for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. During these lunchtimes, students observed their teachers voluntarily (and safely) setting fire to themselves, listen to the pain of jelly babies screaming, watch the creation of toothpaste fit for an elephant and consumed marshmallows flash frozen in liquid nitrogen. Special thanks to Mr Armstrong, Ms Howe, Ms Combes and Rowan for organising and demonstrating these interesting experiments.
An excursion to the Festival of Bright Ideas topped off the week with a group of 45 students from Years 7-10 descending on Princes Wharf 1 for the schools open day. Students participated in three in depth stall sessions before being given free reign to explore the other stalls at the FOBI. At the end of the 90 minute time allotment, students walked over to Salamanca square for lunch at Banjos and the opportunity to visit the science themed shop, Platos. Staff and students had a fantastic time. Thank you to Ms Hughes, Ms Hall, Brady and Ru for this excursion.
Thank you to everybody that participated in Science Week. Science is cool!!!

This term in 9/10 Film Studies we kicked off with an Olympic Games inspired movie, Cool Runnings. To begin, we brainstormed what we already knew about the Olympics in general before diving into a study of the Winter Olympics and the movie itself. No investigation would be complete, however, without some creative fun along the way – these guided drawings of this year’s Olympic mascots are podium-worthy! Well done, 9/10 Film Studies class!
