New Norfolk High is a respectful learning community with high expectations for all. On of the ways in which we show that is through the rage of opportunities we provide students. Over the last fortnight we have had a range of sporting interschool sporting events, our teachers have been working on next steps in Lifting Literacy, and we have celebrated the contribution of all our non-teaching staff.
Following on from the Special Guest at our previous Assembly, a cohort of students ran with Trent Henderson as he finished his final marathon. Raising money and awareness for positive mental health and Speak Up! Stay ChatTY, this was the 110th marathon he has run in 110 days.
In the last fortnight, we also had students who had qualified for the Inter-High Cross Country running at the old Rosny Golf Course. There were significantly steeper sections than in our course along the Lachlan, but our students did a great job showing Growth by improving, even when it was tough, and achieved a number of top twenty finishes. We also had some great results in the Reclink Cricket Finals, coming third and second, and some huge wins in the first of the Reclink AFL 9s competitions.
Our teachers have been working on integrating ‘cloze’ reading activities into our classroom practice. This is an activity for helping to improve students’ fluency, the ability to read aloud in a natural sounding voice. Although it sounds quite straightforward, there is strong evidence that this has significant impact on reading outcomes, which is why it is our next focus in Lifting Literacy.
Finally, we celebrated World Education Support Personnel Day. This is a day to recognise everyone who works at the school who isn’t a teacher, including admin staff, teacher’s assistants, environmental facilities attendants and support staff. It goes without saying that our school would not operate without them and they make a huge contribution to the positive experiences our students have at school. I want to thank them all for their work and the contribution they make to the New Norfolk Way.

NNH Students Shine in AFLW Talent Pathways Selection
Football holds a special place in the heart of New Norfolk, uniting the community through passion, dedication, and a shared love for the game. At New Norfolk High School, this spirit runs deep and this year, we are thrilled to celebrate the achievements of three outstanding students who have been accepted into the AFLW Talent Pathways program—a prestigious opportunity that paves the way for female footballers to reach elite levels in the sport.
Year 9 students Kyeshia, Myler and Milla shared their experiences and aspirations, giving insight into their football journeys.
Interview with Myler:
What has been the highlight of training in the Devils program? "It’s next-level training where you learn new tactics beyond your base level."
What is the most important thing you’ve learned? "You must know how to handle the hard ball and develop high-quality skills."
Who has been the biggest influence on your football journey? "My coach Bradley Chaplin, my dad, and my other coach Colin Garland."
What advice do you have for young girls who want to start playing footy? "It’s not easy to start, but everyone can improve their skills. At the end of the day, no one is perfect at their sport."
What is your football goal for the future? "To make the AFLW and have my family look up to me as a role model—but most importantly, to have fun."
Interview with Milla:
What has been the highlight of training in the Devils program? "Confidence."
What is the most important thing you’ve learned? "Losing isn’t always a bad thing—you can gain something from failure."
Who has been the biggest influence on your football journey? "Joel Selwood, my brother Tyler, and my dad."
What advice do you have for young girls who want to start playing footy? "Don’t give up, no matter how hard it gets. There’s always a light at the end of the tunnel, so keep your head up."
What is your football goal for the future? "To make the AFLW and inspire younger kids looking to play AFL or AFLW. I want them to look up to me as a role model and see kids, teenagers, and adults wearing my number on their guernsey."
Their hard work, determination, and love for the game have led them to this exciting milestone, and we look forward to seeing them continue to thrive in the sport. Congratulations to these incredible students—NNH is proud to support and celebrate your journey in football!

The grade 9s have recently had the opportunity to make a hero’s engine in science, using cans to create a steam engine and practicing their procedural writing in the process. In maths we have been working on linear equations with many of our grade 9s learning algebra in depth for the first time and applying equations to real world situations such as cost efficacy and measurement.
In English, grade 9 has been reading our grade novel, A Simple Gift with many students requesting copies of the book or asking to buy their own copy. It has been great to see the focus in English as everyone works together on their reading and interrogating the deep themes of the book.
NNHS STUDENTS SUPPORT LOCAL IDENTITY TRENT HENDERSON
What a fantastic effort! NNHS students went down to the local esplanade last Friday to run with Trent Henderson as he completed 110 marathons in 110 days. Students and staff connected with, and were inspired by Trent’s courage, persistence and his commitment to supporting the SPEAK UP! Stay ChatTy organisation.
