New Norfolk High is a respectful learning community with high expectations for all. Some of the ways in which we show that are through engaging with parents and co-constructing a consistent response to behaviour.
Building on term 1 being the highest term for attendance we have seen since 2020, term 1 and 2 have seen the lowest number of suspensions since that same year. The 27% fall seen this year means we have seen the equal lowest number of suspensions since 2020. This is a clear demonstration of the impact of our work in developing a consistent response to behaviour and on improving school climate.
We had a significantly improved attendance at our recent parent teacher afternoon. It was great being able to share student food at our VET café and to feel the buzz in the rooms amongst parents, teachers and students as we were able to celebrate their progress in learning so far this year.
Part of this increase in attendance can be put down to the significant increase in parent phone calls made by our teachers this year with a 60% increase over last year. We have made this a real focus because of our commitment to building strong connections with families.
Pathways was an important part of those conversations for our Year 10 students, who have also recently been to Claremont College for a Taster Day. We had wonderful feedback about how our students demonstrated our value of Courage, accepting challenges and embracing opportunities, and Respect.
The first two terms this year have been very successful for the school, and we look forward to taking the next steps in our school improvement journey together because that is The New Norfolk Way.

This week marks the end of Term 2 and the halfway point for the school year. On the last day of term students will celebrate their positive behaviour with our second VIP Day for the year. Throughout the term students have earned points for displaying the school values and receiving pink slips. A variety of VIP activities were on offer to all students, these included an excursion to Zone Bowling, playing a game of golf at the New Norfolk Golf Course, water colour masterpieces and jewellery making workshop, and many others. Students in each home group with the most points, were able to have first selection of activities. We are looking forward to sharing in our student’s success and finishing the term with a fun and engaging afternoon. All students are encouraged to earn as many Class Dojo points as possible, to enable them to be eligible for their number one activity choice next VIP Day.
End of Term Update: Essential Skills and Computing & the Internet
As Term 2 comes to a close, we’d like to acknowledge all students who have completed the Essential Skills and Computing and the Internet course. It’s been great to see students engaging with practical tasks and building foundational skills that will support future learning and employment.
A few final pieces of work are still outstanding, and we encourage students to use the holiday break to complete these so we can start Term 3 with a clean slate.
Coming Up: Community Service Learning
In Term 3, students will begin Community Service Learning, a subject designed to help them explore their local community while developing planning, organisational, and leadership skills.
As part of this subject, students will take part in work placements with local organisations. These placements will offer valuable insight into different jobs and industries, helping students understand how they can contribute to their community in meaningful ways.
We’re looking forward to seeing students take on new challenges and grow through real-world experiences.
Year 8 students have been developing their practical skills in the workshop through two major projects: a wall-mounted planter box and a custom LED light. The planter box project introduced students to timber lamination techniques and emphasised the importance of accuracy — particularly keeping components square during cutting and assembly. The LED light project allowed students to explore design and engraving using our CNC machine, combining creativity with digital fabrication.
Most students have now completed their projects. Those who still need to finish are encouraged to arrange a recess or lunchtime session with Miss Howard next term to complete their work.
Students have also selected new elective subjects for Term 3, continuing to expand their skills in other areas. We look forward to welcoming new students into the workshop and sharing the satisfaction that comes from designing and producing their own projects.

OzHarvest FEAST Program: Creative Cooking with a Purpose
This term, students took part in the OzHarvest FEAST program, a food education initiative that promotes sustainability, nutrition, and reducing food waste. The program encouraged students to think critically about how food is used and how small changes can make a big difference.
To conclude the unit, students participated in a "Use It Up" pantry practical, where they were challenged to prepare a dish using leftover ingredients or items nearing their shelf life. This hands-on activity allowed students to apply their creativity and kitchen skills in a fun and meaningful way.
The results were both inventive and delicious — students prepared a variety of dishes including apple crumbles, butter chicken, tacos, banana bread, and chicken burgers with chips. The activity was a highlight of the term, and students thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to experiment and cook with purpose.

Why turning up matters
Every school day matters. Even just missing one day a fortnight can mean your child misses up to a year and half of their education, between Kindergarten and Year 12
How can I best support my child?
There’s no doubt about it – we all want the best for our children. For their futures to be as bright as possible.
There are lots of things you can do to set your child up for success.

New Norfolk High School will once again be inviting year 5 and 6 students to attend our Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Expo to celebrate Science Week next term on the 13th of August. We will have scientific and technological demonstrations and experiments in which groups of students can participate. Our own students will be involved in setting up and running the activities which include Firework colours, Van de Graaf generator, Bernoulli effect, gliders and more.
We will be running a morning and an afternoon session on the day and bookings will open this week. We look forward to welcoming the primary students and teachers to our school!
Earlier this term, students from all grades were given the opportunity to create an artwork for the Incognito Art Show held in Sydney. However, this art show has a unique twist; while every artwork is for sale, they are all de-identified and you'll only know the artist once you've bought the artwork. It is a not-for-profit show, and all the money raised goes towards organisations that support artists with disabilities.
This year we had 32 artists and over 50 artworks sent to the exhibition, some of which have already sold and can now be shared with you all!
So go take a look online, see if you can find any of our students’ artworks. And maybe you'll find a new artwork for your house, all while supporting a great cause ?
